About Swasdiburi

Speicherstadt, Hamburg (c. June 2014)

Swasdiburi is my last name. A Thai last name, with Sanskrit roots, it stands for prosperous city (in English), or ville prospère (en français).

But there’s more to a person’s name. So a little bit about myself. Born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, I am also a Swiss national. I dabbled around for a year studying Architecture at undergraduate level, before moving to Geneva to study Psychology. In each case, I never stayed long enough to obtain a degree. My third attempt was moving to Paris to study French language and culture. The third attempt worked like a charm, and now I am working for an NGO coalition, exploring human rights and development issues in Laos.

Many of the articles you will find here focus on the city as an object of study, analysis, and creative production. But my interests are not exclusively limited to urban phenomena. Many of the things I publish here are longer pieces of writing adapted from my undergraduate and graduate research. The aim is to cover thought-provoking topics, if not in detail, at least with well-chosen arguments and examples. These writings may be found under the calepin section.

I am currently striving to ‘branch out’ from writing by experimenting with the visual mode. As such, the atelier section is dedicated to my artwork. A photography section is also under development.

Feel free to drop by with thoughtful comments and suggestions. I would be very happy to have fruitful and open discussions with people from around the world.
